After weeks without a UFC event, the promotion started off a jam-packed August with an event on Versus that featured a highlight reel KO, a quick submission and a phenom showing he's ready to jump to the next level.
No. 1 star — Jon Jones: This light heavyweight has been on an upward trajectory since debuting with the UFC the summer of 2008. Save for one disqualification, he's won every fight impressively, and Sunday evening's quick crucifix TKO over veteran fighter Vladimir Matyushenko was no different. What's next for Jones? He wants a serious step up in competition, "someone who is supposedly much better than me."
No. 2 star — Takanori Gomi: The "Fireball Kid" was a PRIDE champion and known for throwing big punches. However, when he made his UFC debut in March against Kenny Florian, we didn't see his heavy hands. We saw him get submitted. This time, Gomi threw a hook that knocked out Tyson Griffin, the first time Griffin has ever been knocked out. That earned Gomi a $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.
No. 3 star — Charles Oliveira: Want to know how to make a memorable UFC debut? Try winning with an armbar in less than a minute the first time you step foot in the Octagon, then follow it up with a speech telling the crowd, "HELLO SAN DIEGO! THANK YOU SAN DIEGO! NO SPEAK ENGLISH! THANK YOU!" Finally, walk away with the $40,000 Submission of the Night bonus.
