The Sun is reporting that Dublin, Ireland will get its first UFC event with UFC 93 on January 17. The card is already stacked at the top with Dan Henderson facing off against Rich Franklin. It also marks the return of Mauricio Rua. When the UFC signed Rua, he was considered by many to be the world's best at 205 lbs. He suffered an upset loss to current UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin and has been injured since. Rua will face mixed martial arts legend Mark Coleman. The Sun also speculated over the weekend that the much anticipated Matt Serra-Matt Hughes fight could be on this card.
The date is significant because it had been mentioned as a candidate for the first Affliction-Golden Boy promotion.
UFC 93 will be one of the first events at the 02 Dublin. The arena is due for completion in December and will hold roughly 9,300. Cold Play will be one of the first big acts to play the arena. Its show on Dec. 21 and 22 sold out in minutes. The UFC will barely beat New Kids on the Block to the punch. Crazy Corrie's favorite group will be there on Jan. 21.
It will be interesting to see how the arena is set up for the event. From looking at the photos on The O2 website, it appears to be laid out in a concert hall format.
Setanta Sports reported this morning and UFC confirmed it with a release that the Henderson-Franklin fight will be at light heavyweight. Will the extra weight provide an advantage for either fighter? If this one stays on the feet it could be a slugfest.
