Ben Rothwell came back from last fight with a unanimous decision win over Pride veteran Gilbert Yvel. The judges saw the fight 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Rothwell.
Rothwell, quite literally, came out swinging. He landed a combination of punches as soon as the bell rang to start the first round, appearing to take Yvel by surprise. Rothwell took Yvel down after the flurry of punches, and though Yvel took control on the ground momentarily, Rothwell was able to gain full mount more than once. When they got back to their feet, Yvel had the upper hand, landing a few strikes that appeared to teeter Rothwell. The action was so back and forth in that round that it was difficult to sore.
The early flurry of activity wore down both fighters, but Yvel was able to take control in the second round. When was on top, he landed a ton of punishing strikes to Rothwell. Rothwell was able to again get full mount. The difference between the two is that Yvel did more damage when he was on top, while Rothwell just merely kept control.
Rothwell started out the third round with another takedown, and he controlled Yvel the entire round, maintaining side control. Both fighters looked exhausted, throughout the whole round.
The win for Rothwell is a rebound from his loss to top UFC heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez. Yvel has now suffered his second UFC loss in as many fights.
