One-dimensional 'Bully' is gone, Maynard now a boxer

Jim Miller was supposed to present unbeaten Gray Maynard his toughest test to date. Miller is a slick southpaw with good standup skills and solid wrestling. He got beat in all facets especially on the feet where it looked like Maynard took a cheese grater to the left side of Miller's face. "The Bully" grabbed a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards.

"(The boxing) was the gameplan. This guy, (Xtreme Couture boxing coach) Gil Martinez, did it for me."

Martinez said they worked with Maynard on staying tight and not getting out of control. Maynard did exactly that landing the right hand lead anytime he wanted. He was super effective when countered Miller's jab with straight rights. By the end of the fight, Miller (13-2) had a nasty cut over and under his left eye. It appeared that a right in the first two minutes of the fight may have broken Miller's nose.

This was impressive for a guy in Maynard, who was purely a wrestler when he made it to the semifinals of The Ultimate Fighter 5 less than two years ago. Maynard who wrestled in college at Michigan State made sure to mention his high school St. Edward to the crowd in Columbus.
