In a battle of two bantamweights coming off of losses, Takeya Mizugaki edged Jeff Curran in a 29-28 split decision at WEC 42.
Mizugaki controlled Curran, a jiu-jitsu blackbelt, for much of the fight. He stuffed Curran's takedown attempts in the first round and avoided Curran's submission attempts in the second round. Curran didn't ever stop, though, fighting from his back throughout the fight. To end the fight, Curran put Mizugaki in a beautiful triangle choke for final minute that Mizugaki somehow made it through.
"The only thing that got me through that choke was my heart," Mizguaki said after the fight.
Jeff Curran, a veteran with more than 40 fights under his belt, lost his three past fights. Mizugaki was part of one of the best fights of the year, a five-round loss with champion Miguel Torres at WEC 40.
