As had been rumored for a long time, the WEC announced on Friday that they are dissolving the middleweight and light heavyweight classes. The WEC's best known and most talented fighters are at the smaller weights, and less than 20 fighters are affected by this move. Assuming that most of the fighters from Zuffa-owned WEC will move to the UFC, the two organizations could make some intriguing match-ups.
Anderson Silva vs. Paulo Filho: This would be every fight fan's dream come true, though the close friends have said in the past that they don't want to fight each other. Now fighting for the same promotion, I don't see how they could avoid it. Filho is undefeated, having fought for both PRIDE and the WEC. Silva hasn't lost a match since January of 2006, and that was because he threw illegal knees. Their similar, unrelenting styles would make for a great fight, friendship be damned.
Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen: The ground game between an NCAA All-American wrestler and a jiu-jitsu black belt could be fantastic. Both have been viewed as future stars of MMA, and then have had up and down careers since. A win over Sonnen could help Marquardt lose his "gatekeeper" tag, and a win over Marquardt could push Sonnen into the upper levels of the UFC middleweights.
What fights at middleweight do you want to see? (Light heavyweights will be discussed tomorrow.)
