Strikeforce was between a rock and a hard place when their lightweight title fight went up in smoke last week because of an injury to Josh Thomson. Gilbert Melendez remained on the card, and Strikeforce inserted submission specialist Rodrigo Damm as the replacement. As is often the case with ground fighters, Damm just wasn't slick enough on the feet. He got dropped by a huge right with 2:43 left in the second round. Melendez jumped on top and landed two clean punches to waste Damm and grab the win at 2:20.
Melendez took Damm down early in the first round and maintained top control for over three minutes. The worn down Damm was easy pickings in the second. Although, there was a moment of danger for Melendez who said he got poked in the eye early in the round and was seeing double for about a minute.
Melendez picks up the Strikeforce interim lightweight title and now waits for Thomson to return from his ankle surgery.
