There's always new blood waiting to make a splash in the UFC. John Howard got his chance and took advantage. He pulled the upset of Chris Wilson by dominating the third round. He did everything right. Howard was the faster fighter standing, most scrambles wound up with him on top and his body lock in the third delivered the victory. Wilson was a 3-to-1 favorite at Las Vegas sportsbooks.
The fighters clinched early in the third, when the fight went to the mat and Howard was able to take Wilson's back. From there, he locked on a body triangle. Howard worked for a choke for the next three minutes and was close to finishing Wilson on one occasion.
Howard won a split decision, 29-28 on two cards while Cecil Peoples had it 29-28 for Wilson. Some media members on press row had Howard winning 30-27.
