Garcia ekes out a split decision over Massouh to start WEC 42

Much as the Riley-Nelson fight was moved to the main card of UFC 101 at the last minutes, Leonard Garcia and Jameel Massouh's scrap was added to the televised portion of WEC 42. Garcia pulled out a close decision to start out WEC 42 on Sunday night. This was Garcia's first fight since losing a title shot to Mike Brown at WEC 39.

In the first round, Massouh recovered from a big right two minutes into the fight that knocked him to the ground. As the two fighters worked their way to their feet, Garcia continued his onslaught, landing knees. But Massouh was successful in taking Garcia down and finished the round throwing elbows.

The second round began with a Garcia guillotine attempt, but Massouh pulled out and stayed on top, attempting to choke out Garcia. The choke was unsuccessful, but tired out Garcia for the remainder of the round. In the final round, Garcia was exhausted and swinging for the fences, loading up every punch that he threw. Massouh was largely in a defensive mode for the entire third.
