Strikeforce announced today that after prolonged negotiations, Fedor Emelianenko will be back fighting for the promotion. He will face Fabricio Werdum on June 26 on Showtime. Emelianenko's first bout with Strikeforce, a TKO of Brett Rogers, was on CBS.
Though Fedor is a heavyweight and considered by many to be the best fighter in the world, he is not fighting for Strikeforce's heavyweight belt. The championship is up for grabs on May 15, when Rogers takes on the champ, Alistair Overeem. This set-up turns the Strikeforce heavyweight division into a two-headed monster where heavyweights can be sent down two different paths: Fight for the belt or fight the best in the world.
This bout will allow the Emelianenko family to try to exact some revenge against Werdum. He defeated Fedor's brother, Aleksander, with a first-round submission in 2006. Werdum is coming off two wins in a row, a decision over Antonio Silva and a submission of Mike Kyle.
