Ronda Rousey and Cris "Cyborg" Justino may one day meet in the UFC Octagon, but it won't be this year at Cowboys Stadium, per UFC president Dana White.
Tito Ortiz, the former UFC light heavyweight champion and Justino's former training partner, created a furor on Friday during an appearance on AXS TV's "Inside MMA" when he said Justino was offered, and accepted, a fight in Cowboys Stadium against Rousey, the UFC's superstar women's bantamweight champion.
I’ve heard from Cris [Justino] actually that the fight that’s supposed to be happening at the Cowboy’s arena … They offered the fight to Cris. I know her management said yes and I’ve told her, ‘Let’s do it.’ So I guess the ball’s all in Ronda [Rousey]’s corner and Ronda wants to do it. Dana said if Cris came down to 135 they’ll make the fight happen, so let’s see if Ronda accepts the fight.
White, who once managed Ortiz but has not been on good terms with him for several years, said there was no truth to anything that Ortiz said.
White said the UFC has not offered Justino any fight, let alone one against Rousey at Cowboys Stadium. A Rousey-Justino fight is, arguably, the biggest that could be made in the UFC and White has already predicted it would do more than 2 million pay-per-view buys if it is made.
The issue, though, is that Justino fights at featherweight, at 145 pounds, a division the UFC does not offer, and has never made bantamweight, where Rousey is the 135-pound champion. White has said that once Justino makes 135 pounds, she'll get a bout with Rousey.
He said after Miesha Tate defeated Jessica Eye in Chicago on July 25 that Tate would get the next shot at Rousey. He's said several times his goal is to make a doubleheader with Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor for the featherweight title and Rousey-Tate for the women's bantamweight belt on Dec. 5 at Cowboys Stadium, but it's not done yet.
White completed eviscerated Ortiz and his report about the offer to Justino.
"That was a complete lie," White told Yahoo Sports. "It's 100 percent a lie. First of all, the UFC doesn't even talk to Tito Ortiz, so let's start there. But we haven't offered any fight to [Justino]. Tito Ortiz is just making this [expletive] up. In no way, shape or form did we offer her a fight against Ronda at Cowboys Stadium. Completely untrue.
"The problem is, this kind of thing gets out there and picks up momentum when there is no truth to it. And it was just something that he decided to make up. But it's not true."
