Big league clubhouses are no different than any other office during March Madness. Brackets are flying all over the place and everybody wants to know which teams you've picked to advance to the Final Four. "Who's getting bounced?" and "Who's this year's George Mason?" replace questions like "Where's my glove?" and "Who did we play yesterday?"
"The NCAA tournament is one of the greatest months of the year," Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira told me earlier this week. "March Madness is awesome. We all enjoy it because we're not in full competition yet, we're still training, we're getting ready for the season.
"So we get to kind of sit back and enjoy [watching] those guys compete."
Over the past week, I asked Grapefruit Leaguers for their NCAA picks. Here are a few of them:
Joba Chamberlain, Yankees
Chamberlain is a Big 12 alum [Nebraska] who has always had a soft spot for the Tar Heels. "I was a big [Michael] Jordan fan growing up, so I think that's where it started."
Chamberlain's Final Four: North Carolina, Pitt, Kansas, Memphis
National Champion: North Carolina
Upset Special: "UCONN's going out early." Chamberlain said. "I think they're gonna get beat in the second round."
Ryan Howard, Phillies
Howard still hadn't made up his mind when I spoke to him on Tuesday. "It's wide open really." he said. "I think when you look at it, you probably would have to say [the champion] would more than likely be a team from the Big East."
Brandon Phillips, Reds.
Phillips will fill out a bracket this year, but it's not the one you'd expect. "When it comes to the women's [bracket} I'll do the women's," Phillips said. "I do the women's [bracket] because my sister [Porsha Phillips] plays for the University of Georgia."
Nick Swisher, Yankees
Swisher attended Ohio State, but he knows his Buckeyes could be in big trouble if they make it to the second round, for a possible matchup against the Big East champ.
"Ohio State's gonna lose in the second round against Louisville," he said.
Swisher's Final Four: Louisville, Memphis, Duke, North Carolina.
National champion: Louisville.
Mark Teixeira, Yankees
No matter what anybody in the Yankees' clubhouse says, Teixeira still believes the ACC is best basketball conference in America.
"I'll always say that," the Georgia Tech alum said with a smile. "No matter what I'll always say that."
Teixeira's Final Four: North Carolina, Memphis, Kansas, Pitt
National champion: North Carolina
Aaron Harang, Reds
The Cincinnati pitcher proves that there will somehow always be some people who couldn't care less about the tournament.
"I don't even know who's in it," he said. "All I've been doing is watching Mickey Mouse clips with my daughter."
