Under threat of rain, MLB postpones Game 6 until Thursday night

The St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers will get another day off before resuming the World Series.

With the chance of rain high for Busch Stadium on Wednesday night, Major League Baseball officials decided to postpone Game 6 until Thursday night. The choice was made around 2:30 p.m. St. Louis time, four and a half hours before the scheduled first pitch.

Though no rain was falling in the early afternoon when he met with MLB officials to decide the game's fate, Cards' GM John Mozeliak told 590 The Fan in St. Louis that the forecast doesn't look good and that the league would do what was best for fans.

"I also think it makes a lot of sense not to play if it's going to be sort of stop-and-go baseball and we're going to be pulling the tarp multiple times," Mozeliak said.

You might remember that Game 2 of the ALCS between the Tigers and Rangers was postponed hours ahead under similar circumstances in Texas and then it never ended up raining. But, like Mozeliak says, better to be safe than pulling the tarp on and off all night and messing up the pitching staffs and the TV ratings and everyone's bedtimes.

Plus, an early postponement should help the Cardinals, who trail the Rangers 3-2 in the Series. This allows them to bring back Chris Carpenter on short rest for Game 7, which would be scheduled for Friday with a St. Louis victory in Game 6.

"I wouldn't over-think that too much, because everyone's available," Mozeliak said. "I think it would be an exciting environment, but I'm not overly concerned who would start that game."

Of course, of course.

I don't know which team would benefit more from an early rainout (perhaps you can discuss it amongst yourselves in the comments), but I do know this: Albert Pujols is going to go loopy if he's stuck at Best Buy for much longer:

This picture, which was reportedly taken on Tuesday night, proves that there are gun shows at Best Buy in Greater St. Louis! And I know what you're thinking. "What's that in his hand? An 'American Idol' volume? The latest from the Wiggles?" Take your guesses in the comments. We might be here a while.

Update on the Blu-Ray: At least one Stewie believes the disc Albert is holding to be the "Captain America" movie, which I enjoyed thoroughly. And isn't the story of Pujols like that of "Captain America"?  Not really, but chew on that thought until Thursday night nonetheless.
