Two Rockies minor leaguers charged with first degree rape in North Carolina, face life in prison

Two minor league players in the Colorado Rockies organization have been charged with first degree rape and would face life in prison in if convicted. The players have been identified as Class-A Asheville relief pitchers Michael Mason and Jesse Meaux, and the alleged offenses are reported to have occurred on Saturday, July 27 at the players apartment in Asheville. N.C.

Here’s more the Asheville Citizen-Times:

Meaux, 23, was released this morning after posting a $100,000 bond, said his attorney, James Minick of Asheville. Meaux declined comment following the hearing. Minick also declined to discuss the case.

Mason, 23, appeared in court via video hookup from the Buncombe County jail. Hill set Aug. 23 as the next court dates for the defendants.

Asheville police charged the men Thursday with two counts each of first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense.

Serious, potentially life-changing charges if proven to be true. In wake of the shocking news, the Colorado Rockies released the following statement on Friday.

"The Colorado Rockies and their affiliate, the Asheville Tourists, are aware of the arrests and the very serious allegations made against two players, Michael Mason and Jesse Meaux," the statement said. "Each organization is shocked and deeply concerned about the allegations. At this time, the players have been suspended as the investigation and legal process continue.

"We are working with the authorities investigating the circumstances and issues surrounding the events and are awaiting further details and findings. Given that this is an ongoing legal investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment or speculate any further."

We also learned that both players have been suspended indefinitely, but that could probably go without saying.

It's sad story that obviously doesn't make anyone feel comfortable, but the Rockies especially have to have their heads down a bit as they attempt to deal with this mess. It also puts some of the higher profile issues baseball has going on right now into a little different perspective. Or at least it should. Keeping the game clean and respectable goes well beyond PEDs.
