Following a nine season stretch that included six postseason appearances and one trip to the ALCS, the Minnesota Twins have been unable to top 66 wins in any of the last three seasons. That’s a sharp decline that isn’t unfamiliar to smaller market teams, but that doesn’t make it any easier for their fans to swallow. To the Twins credit though, they aren’t shying away from their issues.
In the very first line of a new TV ad that debuted this past week and will air through spring training into the regular season, the Twins not only acknowledged their struggles, they were brutally honest about them.
“Even though the Twins have been stinkier than my socks the last few years, they’re still my team,” the young star of the ad almost giddily exclaims.
We said it was brutally honest. It even makes the eyes water a bit, either out of sadness or trauma after recalling the days in college when you wore the same pair of socks for three straight weeks.
It’s stiff. It’s to the point. And most importantly, it’s accurate. But it also sets the stage for a more uplifting message about sticking with your favorite team through the good times and the bad times and never losing sight of why we love baseball to begin with.
It’s in our blood.
That’s a great message.
The butchering of Doug Mientkiewicz’s name was a funny touch as well, though a quick spelling bee scene with the kid racing through his name correctly would have worked as well. Minor gripe, but there’s only so much you can fit in 30 seconds.
On the positive side, it may not be long before Twins actually have reason for optimism. Granted, they took a hit when top prospect Miguel Sano underwent Tommy John surgery three weeks ago, but if he comes back healthy, Byron Buxton continues his development, and they find any type of stability in their starting rotation, they could start chipping away in the AL Central over the next couple years.
