The "NationalMets"??? Yes, that's what Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada called the Major League Baseball team that plays in Washington, D.C. during a speech on the Senate floor Thursday morning.
NationalMets? That's a clown baseball team, bro.
Obviously, Sen. Reid must know the name of the team is really the Washington Nationals, and he's just confusing himself (and us) with one of skipper Davey Johnson's former teams, the New York Mets. As captured on C-SPAN2, Reid was trying to use a baseball analogy to make a point about President Obama not being able to fill out his appointment lineup because of partisan Congressional blockage. Gridlock bad! Reid also dropped the names of Adam LaRoche and Ryan Zimmerman, saying something like, "What if Davey Johnson wanted to use them to play but the Republicans wouldn't until the All-Star break?"
How can the NationalMets expect to win without those guys at the corners?!
Here's the relevant text that includes the flub:
“No president can safeguard America’s national and economic security to the best of his or her ability without their chosen team in place,” Reid began. “So Mr. President, let’s see if we can come up with an example. Davey Johnson is the manager of the NationalMets, this team that we’re so happy to have here in Washington. He’s here as manager of that team, to field a winning team. ..."
Score that "E-Sen.," if you're at home and ... scoring. It's possible, being a Democratic, that Reid wants to nationalize the Mets because they've been so downtrodden and the only way to fix things is for the government to buy them. But then we'd all have the Bill of Rights changed so that we'd have to be Mets fans, and people across the country just won't go for it. First they come for our guns, then they come for our baseball teams, the phrase goes. So it's probably just him misspeaking/misremembering/being Harry Reid.
Reid, you might recall, was quoted using the "Clown Question, Bro" catchphrase made popular by Nationals slugger Bryce Harper (a constituent of Reid's) a season ago. So he likes the baseball. For him then, let's make an All-NationalMets lineup:
