From what I've been told, the hotel lobby serves as the heart of any winter meetings. Here at the Bellagio, though, the elevator bank just off the casino has taken over the role of nerve center with plenty of reporters camped out just in case a general manager or agent deigns to come down from his hotel room with a piece of info to feed the hungry masses.
There are plenty of autograph hounds hanging around, too, and more than a few curiosity seekers who don't know much about baseball but are attracted by the excitement. When Andre Dawson materialized just a few minutes ago and started posing for pictures, a woman walked up and asked if that was the great "Gary Mannix" she had been hearing about. After realizing she was talking about Greg Maddux, I sadly informed her that she was wrong. Still, that didn't stop her from going up and giving Hawk a pat on the back.
Though I was able to see Theo Epstein slipping through the crowd, general manager sightings have been a rare breed so far. Perhaps that will change once all this talk and speculation up in the luxurious suites finally turns into contracts and signatures.
