There are two things that I really enjoy about the game of baseball that actually have very little to do with the game itself.
The first, of course, are the random acts of kindness performed by players, coaches, managers, and even fans, that go a long way towards making another person's day. That's actually the clear No. 1, but next on the list would have to be the great, sometimes creative efforts made by fans to secure to foul balls and home runs.
That covers the feel good side of baseball, and also the entertainment side. But you know what's somehow even better? Those very rare occasions when both of those great feelings come together at the same moment. I'm happy to report this is one of those rare occasions.
Check it out from PNC Park during the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. After Eric Young Jr. sliced a foul ball into the seats along the third base line, an adult Pirates fans leans over the railing into the box seats below to make a play and has it bounce off his hands to the ground below.
To be honest, it was a pretty easy play to make if he's wearing a glove, but I won't beat him up for that based on his next two actions. First, he dives head over heels over the railing to grab the souvenir, which in and of itself was awesome. And to make it even better, he popped right to his feet and immediately handed the ball to a young Mets fan seated in the same section.
The fact that he gave the ball to a Mets fan in a visiting ballpark is about as cool and classy as it gets. Especially when you consider all of the scary situations that have played out and the nonsense fans go through in visiting stadiums these days. Sure, a little give and take can be fun, but there's no reason at all for fans to feel not welcomed in any stadium. It's not difficult to be kind, and if you can make someone's day with a simple action, that's even better. So to this Pittsburgh Pirates fan, I take my hat off and salute him. That was a first class move.
Also, I'd like to note that the beard and the Roberto Clemente jersey are spot on as well. That's my type of sports fan.
