Papi Ortiz and President Obama take selfie

Big League Stew

In what might end up topping the selfie that Ellen DeGeneres and her star acquaintances took on Oscar night, slugger David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox and President of the United States Barack Obama huddled for a self-portrait at the White House on Tuesday. Not long after, Ortiz posted the pic on Twitter.

The World Series champions were being honored on the White House lawn in a friendly informal ceremony — so informal that Ortiz's teammate Jonny Gomes wore a "stars and stripes" red, white and blue jacket and some players didn't even wear ties. Meh, "White House." But there were emotionally touching moments in Obama's short speech, which recalled the Boston Marathon terrorist bombings of 2013 and the Red Sox's reaction — and the city of Boston's reaction — to them.

Somber, but only briefly. It was a fun time had by most, probably mostly by Ortiz, who gets to do all of the cool things he wants.
