News & Notes: Yankees may now be described as 'first place'

A few iterms to peruse while wistfully asking, didn't we almost have it all?

• Hey, look! With Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Rangers, the Yankees moved into first place in the AL East for the first time this season. They're actually tied with the Red Sox — both have 27-20 records — but when you haven't been tops of the pops since April 16, 2008, I'm assuming you don't mind sharing that much. 'First-place Yankees?' Seems both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. [Scott Proctor's Arm]

• Yes, everything seems right in Yankee Universe with its fine citizens discussing possible midseason acquisitions, starting with Colorado's Huston Street(notes), that could bolster the team's bullpen. [Pinstripe Alley]

Day Baseball! Red Sox at Twins, 1:10 ET Of course, this post will most likely look rather stupid later today when Boston wins in the Twin Cities and takes a half-game lead over the dormant Yanks. Or perhaps it will look brilliant if Minnesota rookie Anthony Swarzak(notes) can replicated the seven scoreless innings he threw in his major league debut.

• The New York tabs are already after Mets youngster Fernando Martinez(notes), whose lack of hustle cost the 'Ropolitans during a sixth inning rally on Wednesday. [NYDN]

Corey Hart(notes) on Corey Hart: "I'm (terrible) right now. That's my quote." Let the speculation begin on what (terrible) is actually replacing, but do not speculate if Hart will again be voted into the All-Star Game. He's hitting .205/.255/.295 in May. [Brew Crew Ball]

Day Baseball! Rays at Indians, 12:05 Will the Cleveland curse continue for Longoria & Co. this afternoon? Tampa Bay has lost 16 straight games in The City That LeBron Built.

• So which top prospect do we fixate over now that Matt Wieters(notes) is on his way to Baltimore? How about White Sox youngling Gordon Beckham(notes), who was just promoted to the team's AAA club in Charlotte and whose name will be mentioned any time Josh Fields(notes) boots a ball at The Cell? [South Side Sox]

Stew Schwag! A big BLS head nod goes to loyal Stewie @chapulinceleste, who answered my Twitter query about the Casey Blake(notes) bearded bobblehead by actually going to the game and sending me one. Way too cool, the Dodgers always hand out quality bobbleheads and this bobbleBlake is no exception. Thanks, E!

Manny Ramirez(notes) is likely to do a 7-10 day minor league rehab stint before returning from his suspension on July 3. [Inside The Dodgers]

• Finally, check out this picture of a few Texas Rangers, circa early 2000s. If a picture says a 1,000 words, all of the words in this one would scream "steroids!" [RangerFans]
