First-person skydiving video is neat almost no matter the setting. But make it opening day at Petco Park in downtown San Diego and now you're talking surreal. Navy "Leap Frogs" bailed over Petco on Sunday night before the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers hooked up for the domestic opener, and the results were pretty spectacular. Skydivers usually jump over flat land out in the middle of nowhere, but this was different. The rush of the approaching urban landscape, juxtaposed with the blue of San Diego Bay and green of nearby Coronado Island, was pretty awe-inspiring.
Other neat parts of the video: The gradual increasing sound of the cheering crowd at Petco as the divers fell to the field, and at the very end, after the landing, when the Padres' Friar mascot gave one of the Frogs a high five. Perhaps the two could relate — being a Navy skydiver and a monk take discipline.
Most of all, it was a heck of a way to go to opening day. The only bad part would be needing a ride to get home. If Charlie Finley were alive and there were no players union, he'd probably try and get the A's starting lineup to parachute into Oakland.
