Almost one week after wowing the Cooperstown crowd with a memorable but humble induction speech, Rickey Henderson was back in his native Oakland on Saturday to see his number retired by the A's. And while he never referred to himself as "Rickey" during the Hall of Fame ceremonies, he didn't leave his hometown fans at Oakland Coliseum disappointed, ending his acceptance speech with the following lines:
"Rickey has tears in his eyes. Rickey has love in his heart for you. Rickey is so very, very, very humble."
All in all, it was a pretty entertaining speech and one wonders if Rickey might ever take his constant abuse of plurals into the political arena. Certainly he'd make more sense than some of his opponents out on the campaign trail.
