When I first heard of Baltimore Orioles fans flipping "Hakuna Matata" from Disney's "The Lion King" into "Hakuna Machado" in honor of their young star third baseman Manny Machado, I smiled and thought it was clever. It certainly made for a good T-shirt.
Machado — ready to feel old? — was about to turn 2 when "The Lion King" was released in 1994, so this is of his generation. Thusly, the 21-year-old All-Star has embraced "Hakuna Machado."
And now Hakuna Machado movement looks like it's inching into the baseball mainstream with this new video put out by MLB Fan Cave. It goes a step beyond a T-shirt and gets Machado's teammates and fans to sing "Hakuna Machado" as we watch some of Manny's finer moments.
Pitcher Tommy Hunter deserves a special shout out here for owning his time on the screen better than anyone. And a pat on the back to Machado for being a good sport, because I'm sure there are some tough-guy players who wouldn't be thrilled with their careers being paralleled to Disney films.
But, hey, if Hakuna Machado, like the original song says, really ain't no passing craze, then Manny should be smiling for years to come.
