Lowell Spinners to wear ugly Christmas sweater uniforms in July

It's a game of can you top this around the minor leagues in terms of promotional jerseys and everybody is a winner as a result.

So far we've seen Ghostbusters uniforms for the Toledo Mud Hens, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles uniforms and hats for the Fresno Grizzlies, and the slightly creepy but undoubtedly creative selfie uniforms soon to be donned by the Kalamazoo Growlers. Now comes what may prove to be the best of them all: ugly Christmas sweater uniforms.

You read that correctly. It's going to be Christmas in July for the Lowell Spinners, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and their early gifts to everyone will be these uniforms.

You think Jonathan Papelbon and his ugly sweater collection wishes he came along in the Red Sox system about 10 years later? There's a good chance Max Scherzer is envious, too.

According to the Spinners website, the first 1,000 fans will receive a replica of the uniform. It might be like Black Friday at Wal-Mart trying to get through the gates at LeLacheur Park.

But perhaps the best part of the story — the jerseys in the picture are just a first draft. By the time July 24 rolls around, they could be much uglier. You know some creative fans will pass along some suggestions before hand as well. This has the makings of one of the greatest promotions in MiLB history, and that's covering a lot of ground, folks. Hats off to the Spinners, you've spun a home run here.
