Fred Lewis scoops reporters, announces own trade on Facebook

Like any good outfielder, Fred Lewis(notes) got the jump on the rest of the media when it came to announcing that he had been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night.

Yes, before an Internet outlet or newspaper could break the news Lewis was leaving the San Francisco Giants, the man did it on his own Facebook page.

"Fred is now a Blue Jay" appeared about 6:15 p.m. PT on Thursday.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle confirmed the deal a little later via Twitter. It's for cash or a player to be named later.

Lewis was a starter the past two seasons for the Giants, but he was beaten out for a roster spot this spring. A trade seemed inevitable, and traditional media had been reporting as such.

But Lewis is the only one who can yell "First!"

Everyone knows "FdotLew" is already with the times because he blogs (or did). But this announcement really puts him on the vanguard of social media.

The rest of Lewis' Facebook page doesn't have much going on other than occasional messages from fans or Fred. So, we can't make fun of him for having a "Farmville" nursery, or shake our heads at his ill-timed vendettas that are killing his "Mafia Wars" family.

Fred does belong to a group — "I hate people who only call me for free tickets."

Oh, those ballplayers.
