Attention all baseball-crime types: The Smoking Gun has posted video and a detailed account of Joba Chamberlain's DUI arrest from last fall.
While the release doesn't match Tony La Russa's clip in terms of "Am I really seeing this?" factor, it's definitely worth a curious look if that's your type of thing, mostly because it seems that not even Yankee wunderkinds are immune from being duped from funny online videos produced by Reno 911.
From The Smoking Gun:
"While seated in the police cruiser's front seat, Chamberlain, 23, was directed to twice recite the alphabet. Before beginning, he asked Grummert whether he would have to say the letters backwards, and wondered whether the trooper had seen a certain famous video.
"'Have you ever seen the test on the Internet? The dude does it from forward to backwards and then starts, he does it backwards and starts dancing.' Chamberlain added, 'The officer has it on tape on her camera. She starts dancing and he says, 'I don't do that 'cause I'm drunk.'"
"The video in question, however, is actually a clip from the Comedy Central show "Reno 911." Chamberlain, though, is not the only one to have been fooled into believing the clip was from actual police dashboard camera footage."
Later, Joba reportedly asked the cop if he heard about that bride and groom who fell into the pool after the best man tripped or if the Yankees were thinking about signing that ballgirl who made that amazing catch off the wall in left field.
OK, not really. He actually assumed that the police officer knew who he was — "Obviously, I play for the Yankees," he said — and then shared a few thoughts on the Big Apple including his beliefs that New Yorkers are rude and Yogi Berra is short.
