The Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays will wear new caps from New Era's Diamond Era line during spring training and at other times this season. Retro designs and national pride headline the changes.
The Braves and White Sox caps should look familiar to longtime fans, while the Blue Jays' cap isn't blue at all, and is aimed squarely at Canadians who will proudly wear a bright red cap with a maple leaf. It's in line with some of the team's previous Canada Day garb, and will supplement a blue version of the cap the Blue Jays will continue to wear too.
The Diamond Era line is the secondary line of caps for MLB players. Think of these like the alternate jerseys teams wear, just the cap version. Players might wear these in spring training games, batting practice or select regular season games. The teams work with New Era to create a different look than the official on-the-field caps, often times recalling an old logo (like the Brewers' cap in this line) or showcasing a different color (like this Rays cap).
“With the innovation, performance attributes and styling that go into the New Era 59FIFTY cap with Diamond Era technology, they are fast becoming both a player and fan favorite,” said Todd Sokolowski, senior director of on-field product for New Era. “Our designers have a lot of fun collaborating with the teams to create new logos and color schemes and we are excited to introduce this year’s collection.”
Here's a closer look at each new cap, along with a blurb from New Era about its inspiration:
Atlanta Braves — 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of legendary slugger Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record, and the new cap design reflects the style and logo of the cap the team wore at that time.
Chicago White Sox – The new logo takes elements of the White Sox retro “batter man” logo that was popular from 1976–1986 and introduces a new deconstructed design.
Toronto Blue Jays – The new design takes elements of their current logo and incorporates the country flag colors.
Curious what the previous ones looked like? This gallery of New Era Diamond Era caps will show you. The White Sox and Braves are definite improvements upon caps that were otherwise pretty similar to the their official on-field caps. These new Diamond Era caps will be out at national retailers, neweracap.com and MLB.com in time for the start of spring training.
