Showdown, Week 27: Steve Stricker vs. Jason Day

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Shane Bacon and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. (Double for the majors.) And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. We head to the bearded one's tournament this week, with the AT&T National.

Bacon: I can't believe I haven't picked him yet, but I will do it right now and be completely happy about it. Steve Stricker is my man this week, since he's won the event the last two years and is still playing some great golf. The good news is, even if Stricker doesn't win, he shouldn't be that far behind; in his 10 stroke play events this season, Stricker has finished out of the top-18 just once.

Busbee: Solid choice. Me, I'm going with Jason Day. Major Secondplace needs to break through, and this is a fine place to do it. In his last seven events, he's carded six top-10s, and ranked T31st in the other. He's the best bet to knock off Stricker this week. He'd better be.

Last week: Busbee's pick of Gary Woodland finished T47 at the AT&T, carding a couple sub-70 rounds and generally looking fairly sharp. Solid pick, right? Who did Bacon have ... ? KJ Choi. Who finished second. Oh. Never mind.

Current standings: Bacon 17, Busbee 15
