So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. This week: we knock out a little gumbo with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Busbee: Just like R2D2, I'm riding with Luke, baby -- Luke Donald, that is. He's the marquee name at the tournament this week, and while I can't imagine his tender English stomach can handle some good ol' N'Awlins jambalaya, I think his sticks will handle TPC of Louisiana just fine. Sure, he has some troubles finishing tournaments, but like the line goes about the two guys getting chased by the bear, I don't have to be faster than the bear (or win the tournament)--I just have to finish ahead of you, Bacon.
Bacon: Gentlemen and ladies, consider this the first week I'm actually thinking ahead for the rest of the year. Sure, Pat Perez seems like an obscure pick until you see what he's done the last two weeks; a tie for fifth at San Antonio followed by a t-6 at the Heritage. He has played well here before, and Perez seems like the golfer that can ride the momentum train all the way to a victory.
Last week: It seemed Busbee's pick of Jim Furyk had it all but wrapped up after three rounds left him a shot back of the lead heading into Sunday, but a final round 76 dropped him 19 spots, and one behind Bacon's pick of Aaron Baddeley, who finished at 6-under to Furyk's 5-under.
