Showdown, Week 14: Phil Mickelson vs. Anthony Kim

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Shane Bacon and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. This week: the Masters, where a victory over the other guy is worth two points!

Busbee: Phil Mickelson. Here it is. Saved him all year ... well, all 14 weeks .... for this tournament. He's absolutely clicking at the perfect time. I'm still not convinced he'll win; this sets up a little too perfectly for him. Remember last year, Phil was an afterthought. But I think he'll stay in the mix all weekend and bring home a much-needed W for Team Busbee.

Bacon: Real quick, are there a lot of nightclubs in Augusta? Nope. OK, perfect, because I'm going with Anthony Kim! A good showing a week ago in Houston, Kim is heading to the Masters after a third-place finish in 2010. He seems to be the king of making birdies at this golf course, so if he can avoid the bogeys (and the disco ball), I think he has a good shot here.

Last week: Oh, this was an ugly one. Busbee's pick of Jhonattan Vegas missed the cut at the Shell with a 73-75, but so did Bacon's pick of Spencer Levin, who stumbled home with a 74-78. Let us never speak of this tournament again.
