So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Shane Bacon and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. This week: the Blue Monster!
Bacon: The reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, indeed! Last week, for the first time, I actually DESERVED a win, thanks to a final round from Mr. McDowell that looked as polished as his U.S. Open trophy. This week, at Doral, I'm swinging big with Nick Watney. The guy has four top-10s in his first four starts this year, and finished second at this event in 2009. Bring me another point, Sir Nick, and may Busbee be down on the canvas forever!
Busbee: I'll see your Watney and raise you a Kuchar. Matt Kuchar, that is, who's as close as we can get to an automatic lock for a top 10 this season. In six events, he's got four top-10s and five top-25s. And as long as he doesn't pull a Tim Clark and bail, I'm feeling good about my chances.
Last week: It was tight heading into the final round of the Honda Classic, with Bacon's Graeme McDowell leading Busbee's Brian Gay by only three strokes. But the Alabama Irishman demolished the course, carding a 64 to wrap a 12-stroke victory over Gay. Ouch.
Overall record: Busbee 6, Bacon 3
Already used: Busbee: Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Chad Campbell, Bill Haas, Nick Watney, Tim Clark, Hunter Mahan, Graeme McDowell, Brian Gay. Bacon: Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Marino, Ben Crane, Jhonattan Vegas, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell.
And your Cadillac Championship pick is ... ?
