Shotgun Start: Previewing the Humana Challenge

It's tournament time! We continue the season in the famed Coachella Valley, as the tour heads to Southern California for the Humana Challenge. Here's a tournament primer to get you prepared for the week.

The course: PGA West has six courses to choose from -- a dream setting for vacationing golfers -- but only the Nicklaus and Palmer tracks will be in play at the Humana. Relatively short by tour standards, both are just shy of 7,100 yards and offer picturesque views of the Santa Rose Mountains. PGA West is considered one of the easiest venues on tour, so if you want to win this week, you'll need to fire at the flag and go low.

The schedule: Tournament runs Thursday-Sunday. It'll be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday, and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday.

The field: Once considered a premier stop on the PGA Tour, the event formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic has waned in popularity over the last 10 years, as high-profile names passed on the West Coast Swing opener. But with a new name, format (four days of golf instead of five), and former President Bill Clinton running the show, players have returned. Phil Mickelson headlines the event, along with Dustin Johnson -- who's making his first start since right knee surgery at the end of 2011 -- and FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas. You'll also want to keep an eye on Greg Norman, Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell III, Johnson Wagner and Anthony Kim.
