The rough at Merion is very, very thick

Here are the things you've probably heard so far about Merion, the venue for the 2013 U.S. Open:

1.) It isn't a long golf course by USGA standards.
2.) The greens are diabolical.
3.) You better hit fairways or you will be dealing with some nasty rough that is intended to ruin your scorecard.

The third one is probably the most important and as you can see from the above picture, absolutely accurate. Justin Rose's caddie, Mark Fulcher, posted the above picture to Twitter and if you're having a hard time trying to figure out what that is in the middle of the picture, it's a golf ball, swallowed up by that thick grass.

So, yes, make sure you hit the fairways at Merion or else plan something else to do next weekend that does not include golf.
