Rocco Mediate's ace puts him atop the leaderboard

If you don't feel a twinge of sympathy every time you see Rocco Mediate, my friend, you have no soul. The guy who was on the receiving end of one of Tiger Woods' most devastatingly impressive wins, the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, continues to smile his way through the PGA Tour. And sometimes, good karma joins him on the tee, as at Thursday's opening round of the Open:

The ace allowed Rocco to take a one-stroke lead into Friday. Mediate now sits 182nd on the money list, and needs to get into the top 125 to retain his tour card for next year. He hasn't finished higher than ninth in a major since Torrey Pines, and he knows exactly why:

"It’s all about putting," Mediate said after his Thursday round. "It has just been destroying me. I reach the fairway and hit the green but I three-putt three to five times a day and you’re not going to beat anybody doing that."

Hey, just keep on canning it from off the green. Problem solved!
