You have to give credit to Bubba Watson. This week was his first visit to Firestone Country Club, and subsequently his first time in the field at the Bridgestone Invitational.
These are the sort of tournaments that you make when you finally win on tour, and Watson did that earlier this season at the Travelers Championship.
Heading into this week, Watson said his goals weren't just on these four rounds at the World Golf Championships event, but to possibly sneak his way on the Ryder Cup team, something that would help boost the personality level on the American squad. After Thursday, Bubba might just do that.
His 6-under 64 was the lowest opening round of the year for Watson, and gave him the lead outright with the morning crew. After his round, he was being interviewed by The Golf Channel, when they asked his goals.
"I'm just trying to make the cut," Watson admitted, honestly. The problem is, there is no cut at the Bridgestone. When told that, Bubba answered like only Bubba would answer.
"Well, perfect then. I made it."
Watson is the type of personality that is great for the PGA Tour, and if he could start winning, with his long bombs off the tee and carefree attitude, it would do a lot for those looking to root for those not named Tiger and Phil.
