According to a million different reports -- a tweeting Bob Nightengale was the first -- Victor Martinez(notes) is headed to the Red Sox. Yahoo!'s Gordon Edes filed this report over at Big League Stew:
Pending medicals and finalizing fine print, the Red Sox and Indians have struck a deal in which Boston will acquire switch-hitting catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez for a package of prospects that doesn't include top pitching prospect Clay Buchholz(notes). That's according to multiple sources.
Fantasy owners in AL-only leagues have dodged yet another bullet. If you're a Martinez owner, you're thrilled by this news. He moves to a great home hitting environment and a loaded lineup. Martinez figures to split catching duties with Jason Varitek(notes) while also spending time at first base and DH. Cleveland's Kelly Shoppach(notes) gets a short-term bump from the deal, although Carlos Santana remains the future backstop. Recently acquired Lou Marson(notes) (.294/.384/.369 at Triple-A) should get a look in '09 as well. (By now you've heard enough of my pining for Matt LaPorta(notes). Dignity has been lost; only one home run has been gained).
Boston has managed to acquire an impact bat without flipping Buchholz or Daniel Bard(notes), so you have to consider this a rather successful day. The Red Sox
need to find quickly found a new home for Adam LaRoche(notes). He's headed back to Atlanta in exchange for Casey Kotchman(notes). That really destroys Kotchman's value and restores LaRoche's. Mike Lowell(notes) is a drop in public-style mixed leagues.
The Red Sox send RHP Justin Masterson(notes), LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Bryan Price to the Tribe for V-Mart. Fantasy owners are already familiar with Masterson; his value gets a boost here, assuming that he'll transition to Cleveland's rotation. Hagadone was Boston's top pick in the '07 draft and the system's No. 3 prospect entering the season according to Baseball America. The lefty had Tommy John surgery in '08, and he has a 2.52 ERA and 32 Ks in 25 innings at Single-A this year. He's a solid score for the Tribe. Price has a 4.67 ERA at Single-A with 97 Ks in 96.1 innings. Obviously the two prospects won't have any immediate fantasy value in standard leagues, but it's a nice haul.
Please stay tuned, gamers. More on various deals and non-deals as information arrives. For now, go buy your tickets for V-Mart bobblehead night.
