LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana looked fit and trim and easily made weight Friday for their WBA-WBC welterweight title bout on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden. Mayweather weighed 146 pounds and beamed as the crowd roared when he stepped onto the scale. Maidana, who is about a 12-1 underdog, weighed 146.5.
But in the last 72 hours before the fight, questions have arisen about Mayweather's focus. On Episode 1 of Showtime's All Access show, Mayweather revealed he'd separated from fiancée Shantel Jackson.
That could cause problem enough for an athlete preparing for a major event, but Mayweather then dropped a bombshell on Wednesday when he briefly posted a sonogram on his Facebook page of what were purportedly his twins Jackson was carrying. He quickly deleted it. Under the sonogram, he wrote:
The real reason me and Shantel Christine Jackson @missjackson broke up was because she got a abortion, and I'm totally against killing babies. She killed our twin babies.
After weighing in on an elaborate stage in the Grand Garden, Mayweather was asked about personal problems and his focus by Showtime's Jim Gray, but Mayweather smiled and didn't take the bait.
"My job is to go out there and do what I do best," Mayweather said to Gray. "I think I perform better under pressure. So I look forward to going out there, being Floyd Mayweather, taking my time, keeping my composure and going out there and doing what I do best."
If Mayweather is not distracted by outside issues, then it's hard to see how he loses. Bettors have made him a nearly 12-1 favorite and in one media poll, the results were 46-0 in favor of Mayweather.
