Brandon Phillips had a fantastic way of dealing with a drunk heckler earlier Wednesday night when his Cincinnati Reds were playing in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. He gave the guy a signed ball telling him to shut up (with a couple extra words added) and took a selfie with him.
The drunk heckler's brother posted an account of the run-in on Reddit, fully admitting his brother was (a) drunk and (b) heckling Phillips. Rather than ignoring the heckler as pro athletes usually do, Phillips had some fun and seems to have even won over the heckler's family.
From Reddit user Placenta_Claus:
He started on Joey Votto earlier in the game, yelling things like "Votto has feminine hips!" and "Looks like Votto could easily birth twins!". He said the crowd around him were chuckling the entire time.
Rain delay in the 7th inning, but afterwards, he got started on Brandon Phillips. Yelling "Hey everybody, look how slow Phillips is!". My brother said the stadium was almost empty at this point, so his heckles rang loud and clear. According to him, Phillips even looked over and chuckled at one point.
Anyways, after the game, Brandon Phillips runs over and hands my brother this ball:
Afterward, Phillips snapped this selfie with the Sir Heckles a Lot (that's him on the left, if the drunky eyes weren't a dead giveaway). Phillips, if you've never looked at his Twitter feed, is the undisputed king of co-starring in fan selfies.
You gotta give it to Phillips here. He managed to both mock the heckler and reward him — so he comes off looking like the bigger man, but still gets a jab in. Plus, he wins a virtual ton of Internet cool points.
Now, if only Phillips can learn to solve all his disputes in such good-humored ways.
