Boston Celtics fans will be keeping tabs on Saturday's NBA play-in tournament game for the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
The No. 8 seed Portland Trail Blazers will play the No. 9 seed Memphis Grizzlies. All the Blazers need is a win Saturday and they clinch a playoff spot. Even if the Blazers lose Saturday, they would still get in if they beat the Grizzlies on Sunday. The Grizzlies must beat the Blazers on Saturday and Sunday to secure the eighth seed.
Don't miss NBC Sports Boston's coverage of Celtics-76ers, which begins Monday at 5:30 p.m. with Celtics Pregame Live followed by tip-off at 6:30 p.m. You can also stream the game on the MyTeams App.
So, why are the Celtics interested in these games? Well, if the Grizzlies win this play-in tournament, they will send their 2020 first-round draft pick to Boston. If the Grizzlies lose Saturday and miss the playoffs, they would send the pick to Boston if it landed outside the top four in the draft lottery. If Memphis misses the playoffs and jumps up into the top four of the lottery, then the Grizzlies would instead convey their 2021 first-rounder to Boston unprotected.
The chances of the Grizzlies jumping up in the lottery are slim, but we've seen plenty of surprises over the years. The odds of the Grizzlies being in the lottery are actually pretty good. The Blazers have been red-hot in the league's restart and earned a 6-2 record in the seeding games. Blazers superstar guard Damian Lillard has been the best player in the bubble with an average of 37.6 points scored per game, including a 61-point performance in a win over the Dallas Mavericks.
