2018 Mitty post Nicole Blakes made a commitment to San Diego this week. The 6-foot-2 post has made excellent strides over the past year and was a key player off the bench in the Monarchs’ run to the Open Division state finals.

Ranked No. 30 in the spring 2018 rankings, Blakes is an athletic post who can run the floor for transition buckets, pull defenders out of the lane with a mid-range game and is a good shot blocker. This last asset will likely carve out a role for the Toreros once she gets on campus. They were No. 304 out of 345 teams in blocked shots per game last season with their tallest player being 6-foot-2.

San Diego had five straight seasons of at least 20 wins prior to last year’s 14-16 record. Maya Hood, one of three seniors on the roster, played just nine games before a season ending knee injury.

Blakes averaged four points and three rebounds as a junior with 1.4 blocks per game; good for third on the team.
