On Tuesday, comedian and former “Saturday Night Live” star Norm Macdonald died after a private nine-year battle with cancer, his manager Marc Gurvitz confirmed to USA TODAY.

Macdonald opted to keep the diagnosis quiet from the public because he did not want it to affect the way his fans or family members viewed him. He had Lori Jo Hoekstra, a friend and producing partner, by his side at the time of his death.

The news immediately spread across social media with celebrities, comedians and fans offering their tributes to the former “Weekend Update” anchor. Brooklyn Nets forward Blake Griffin was also among those that honored the comedic legend.

Griffin reshared an infamous video clip of Macdonald crashing his Rookie of the Year press conference in 2011. Macdonald was sitting with members of the media and chimed in to ask a rather hilarious question.

Prior to resharing the video clip of the press conference, Griffin honored Macdonald by calling him one of his early comedic heroes. He had met Macdonald several times over the years and said he was lucky to have known him.
