Blaine Gabbert knocked out of game after illegal hit to helmet

Tennessee Titans quarterback Blaine Gabbert is being evaluated for a concussion following an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit from Jacksonville’s Malik Jackson.

Gabbert was playing in place of injured starter Marcus Mariota, who was then subbed into the game once it became clear Gabbert needed medical attention.

The flag on the play was due to Jackson lowering the head to initiate contact. It was an automatic 15-yard penalty, but came at a cost to the Titans, who were relying on Gabbert to steal a victory in Jacksonville.

After leading Tennessee to a victory last week against the Houston Texans, the Titans were trying to buy more time for Mariota to regain feeling in his hand after pinching a nerve in his elbow. Gabbert had completed just one of three passing attempts for eight yards on Sunday before being forced out of the game. He was also sacked twice for a loss of 17 yards.

Mariota attempted one pass on his first series but wasn’t able to connect on it. He wound up rushing twice on the drive before the Titans were forced to punt.

If Gabbert can’t return, it’s worth watching to see just what kind of plays Tennessee tries to run with their injured star player.
