New photos show the moments before a Black Lives Matter protester carried an injured white man to safety at the weekend.

Patrick Hutchinson has been described as a hero after he was seen carrying the man over his back, which he said he did to stop the man from getting hurt.

It followed violent clashes in London between police and far-right demonstrators who said they turned up to defend statues.

Hutchinson and his friends intervened when they saw an encounter involving the white man near the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.

He said the man was on the ground and that he and his friends moved to prevent him being trampled.

The photos show men standing around the individual, blocking off onlookers and gesturing apparently for other people to stay back from the man.

Hutchinson told the BBC: “I scooped him up into a fireman’s carry and marched him out with the guys around me, protecting me and shielding me and protecting this guy from getting any further punishment.

“I wasn’t thinking, I was just thinking of a human being on the floor. It wasn’t going to end well had we not intervened.

“We did what we had to do. We stopped somebody from being killed.”

Hutchinson, a personal trainer and grandfather, carried the man to police officers, and it was reported the white man did not say anything.

The recent Black Lives Matter protests have been held in the wake of George Floyd’s death in US, which followed a white officer kneeling on his neck to pin him to the ground.

A rival demonstration, held by people claiming they wanted to defend statues, clashed with police in London.

They said they wanted to protect monuments like the Winston Churchill statue, which had to be boarded up after being vandalised during a previous anti-racism demonstration.
