Bills WR Cole Beasley played through broken leg
Quarterback Josh Allen was among members of the Bills that were through the roof explaining how impressive it was for wide receiver Cole Beasley to play through injury earlier this postseason. Allen exclaimed Beasley was “tough as nails” after Buffalo’s Wild Card win vs. the Indianapolis Colts.
Somehow, Allen still undersold it.
On Monday via video conference from Bills locker cleanout day, Beasley revealed what exactly happened when he was injured. In Week 16 against the New England Patriots toward the end of the game, Beasley took a knock near his knee.
The slot receiver revealed that the injury was a broken fibula, a bone in the lower leg.
… Yes, somehow, Beasley managed that pain and suited up in three playoff games after that. In total, Beasley had 14 catches for 145 in Buffalo’s three-game run to the AFC Championship game.
But what might be even more impressive was how much Beasley downplayed the injury.
“It was bad the first game I played, but after that… it’s kind of, you take a few meds and suck it up,” Beasley said.
In fact, the thing that seemed to bother the 31-year-old the most was actually missing playing time in the Bills’ season finale vs. the Miami Dolphins.
“No, I mean, I knew the next game was probably out of the question,” Beasley said. “There was no way I was going to miss the playoff game.”
Missing that final contest likely did cost Beasley his first-career 1,000-yard season. Still, the second-team All-Pro selection did finish 2020 with a career-best campaign in terms of both catches (82) and yards (967).
There isn’t a single statistic can measure Beasley’s commitment and ability to play through injury, though. That’s undoubtedly impressive and he’s earned some time off.
Beasley’s broken fibula wasn’t a full break he said and it isn’t going to require offseason surgery.
