Sanity has come to Buffalo. At least for now.

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott told reporters on Wednesday that rookie quarterback Josh Allen is week-to-week due to an elbow sprain suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans and veteran Derek Anderson will start this week’s game against the Colts.

Anderson joined Buffalo earlier this month

Thankfully for the Bills, their fans and anyone who watches the NFL, Nathan Peterman will be on the bench.

The 35-year-old Anderson just signed with the Bills on Oct. 7, but both McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane know him from their days with Carolina. Anderson was Cam Newton’s backup for several years, while McDermott was the Panthers’ defensive coordinator and Beane a personnel executive.

Anderson has also worked with Bills’ offensive coordinator Brian Daboll before: Daboll was the OC in Cleveland in 2009-10, and Anderson was there from 2005-09.

‘I’m always going to do what I feel is right’

There was an ESPN report on Tuesday that McDermott risked losing the Bills’ locker room if he started Peterman.

Asked if he had such a concern, McDermott said, “I’m always going to do what I feel is right for this football team. I certainly trust and have a heck of a lot of respect for our locker room.”

Of course, it wasn’t long ago that McDermott also said Peterman had earned the right to be the Week 1 starter.

Peterman has struggled mightily

While McDermott has publicly been fairly supportive of Peterman, a fifth-round pick in 2017, the performance just isn’t there.

Last week, he came on with 2:41 to play in the third quarter, after Allen’s injury, and got Buffalo into the end zone after the defense forced a turnover, putting Buffalo up 13-10 with the touchdown pass to Zay Jones.

But with the game tied 13-13 with just over 90 seconds to play, Peterman threw a pick-six to the Texans’ Jonathan Joseph then threw another interception when he was desperately trying to move the ball to force overtime.

In six games, three of them starts, over his short career, Peterman has completed just 44.3 percent of his passes (35-for-79) and has nine interceptions, meaning roughly one of every nine pass attempts has been picked off.
