The Bills don't exactly deny that LeSean McCoy is available for a trade

It would have been easy enough for the Buffalo Bills to say on Wednesday that they have no interest in trading LeSean McCoy. But that’s not what happened.

There was an interesting news story Tuesday: The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly called the Bills to talk about a possible trade for McCoy. The Eagles need help at running back after losing Jay Ajayi to a torn ACL. McCoy had some great years with the Eagles and is still capable of playing at a high level.

It’s not ideal to have trade rumors swirling around your best player in the middle of a season, so the Bills could have shot it down. That’s not what happened when Bills coach Sean McDermott was asked about it Wednesday.

Sean McDermott didn’t deny LeSean McCoy is available

McDermott wanted to address the rumors, but did so without really answering the key question.

“LeSean is one of our better players. He had a good game the other day. We’re looking forward to playing the Houston Texans,” McDermott said, according to the team’s site. “We get incoming calls all the time. Brandon (Beane, Buffalo’s general manager) and I talk a lot and I won’t go into any more detail than that.”

But is McCoy available in a trade?

“I’m not going into that,” McDermott said, according to the team’s site. “He’s a valuable member of our football team and I’m going to leave it at that.”

McDermott could have said no, that McCoy is too valuable for the 2-3 Bills to trade. He didn’t.

McCoy said he heard about the trade rumors but was “worried about the task at hand,” according to Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com

A McCoy trade would be smart for the Bills

Trading McCoy makes sense for the Bills.

McCoy is 30 years old. The Bills have to assume they’re not going to be in playoff contention this season, despite a couple of early wins. They’ve been pretty honest about their rebuilding efforts. Trading McCoy, who is their best player but at an age in which running backs often slow down (not to mention the off-field issues hanging over him), is just smart business.

That doesn’t mean it will happen. Maybe McDermott has no intention of trading McCoy but didn’t want to express that publicly. The Eagles, or any other team needing a running back, might not be willing to give the Bills enough draft capital to make it worth Buffalo trading their top player.

But it seems like the Bills will at least listen. If things work out, maybe we’ll get one of the bigger midseason NFL trades we’ve had in a while.
