Bill Belichick predictably didn't have much to say after Patriots loss

It’s not like Bill Belichick is verbose even in the best of times. After a tough loss on Sunday night, he really wasn’t going to share much.

The New England Patriots suffered their first loss of the season, falling 37-20 to the Baltimore Ravens. For the first time all season, it looked like an AFC team might be able to knock them off in the playoffs. Lamar Jackson had a nice day against Belichick’s defense. It wasn’t a great day for New England.

And Belichick didn’t have much to say afterward. It was a classic Belichick news conference.

Bill Belichick: ‘Certainly didn’t coach well’

Belichick was grumpy after the loss, though he usually has the same demeanor with the media regardless of what’s going on.

“There is really not much to say tonight,” Belichick said to start his news conference. “Obviously, we didn't do anything normal, certainly didn't coach well. Give them credit, they were better than we were tonight, certainly the better team. We all have to do a better job.”

That was as much as he shared.

According to the Patriots’ transcript, Belichick took 11 questions. He answered nine with a single sentence, one with two sentences (one was “I don’t know”) and his longest answer was three sentences for a gregarious 21 words.

Belichick says amazingly little

Since it won’t take long, here is the entire list of questions with answers from Belichick, from the Patriots’ transcript:

(on the difference of watching Lamar Jackson on tape vs. live) "I don't know. Right now, they are not on the schedule, so we don't have to worry about them."

(on self-inflicting mistakes) "They played better than all of us."

(on if he considered going for it on fourth down before the half) "We took the points."

(on the development of WR Mohamed Sanu Sr.) "Like I said, we all need to do a better job."

(on if he can take anything from fighting back from down 17) "We competed out there. It just wasn't good enough. We all have got to do a better job, starting with me."

(on what QB Lamar Jackson's performance says about their defense) "They were better well coached, and they have a lot of weapons."

(on if the Ravens' offense showed what he expected) "They always have a couple new wrinkles; they do that every week."

(on if there was anything specific he didn't have the team prepared for) "It's obvious."

(on if he saw fatigue in his defense after the Ravens' 9-minute drive) "They had a couple key plays in situations."

(on the effect of WR Julian Edelman's fumble in the third quarter) "I don't know."

(on if he saw what caused the neutral zone infractions) "I couldn't see."

Enthralling.

You can’t blame Belichick for not being in a great mood. The Patriots weren’t exactly exposed, but it was the first time an opponent did anything against his defense. Jackson might be a real problem in the playoffs, too.

If Belichick was worried — or sad, or angry, or frustrated, or content, or anything — he wasn’t going to say on Sunday.
