Minty Bets, Pamela Maldonado and Ariel Epstein give their picks for which team they like to cover the spread in Week 9.
MINTY BETS: Entering week 9, NFL favorites of 7 or more points have gone 9 and 17 against the spread. I'm Minty Bets, joined by Pam Maldonado, and Ariel Epstein, and we've got four match-ups to choose from with a spread of 7 or more points. Eagles versus the Texans, Bengals versus the Panthers, Bills at Jets, and Chiefs versus the Titans.
Pam, let's start with you first. Which match-up are you looking at, and which team are you trusting to cover a larger spread here?
PAMELA MALDONADO: I'm putting my trust in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs, minus 12 and 1/2 at home to the Titans. The Tennessee passing defense, 24th in opponent yards per pass attempt, eighth worst on the road in opponent in yards per completion. This Titans secondary against Patrick Mahomes, the magician.
The Titans, on the road against the Bills, lost 41 to 7. But Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw for over 300 passing yards, 8.3 average, 4 touchdowns, zero interceptions. The Titans secondary against a now-benched Colts quarterback in Matt Ryan, Washington's Carson Wentz allowed both of those quarterbacks over 350 yards passing, 9 and 1/2 average between these two, 4 touchdowns.
Again, it's the Titans secondary against Patrick Mahomes, who leads the league in passing touchdowns, is top five in the league for passing yards, yards per pass attempt, and who averages over 300 passing yards per game. Oh, and by the way, Mahomes now has an absolute great connection with his wide receivers, because apparently after playing hours of Call of Duty, this offense is now in sync, as we saw just last week when they put up 44 points against the 49ers on the road.
MINTY BETS: Ariel, what have you got for us?
ARIEL EPSTEIN: I'm going with a dog, a double-digit dog, the Houston Texans getting 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's that spot where you're getting the undefeated team coming in on a short week, on the road, nonetheless. Houston's home-road splits are drastic. Now, it wasn't a great game against Tennessee last week, and I lost a lot of props to the Texans quarterback Davis Mills. However, that was the first time in the last two years that he struggled at home against the bad pass defense.
Now it's different, because the Eagles do have a good pass defense. The problem here for the Eagles is that their run defense is where they struggle more. Now you get a Texans running back in Dameon Pierce who has been running the ball so well-- at least 80 rushing yards against defenses that are not inside the top 10. I'll take Dameon Pierce to help run the clock out, give the Texans some time of possession, and catch this undefeated Eagles team. On a short week on the road, I'll take the 13.
MINTY BETS: Ooh, I like that bold pick. All right, guys. I'm going with the Buffalo Bills, and minus 13 over the New York Jets. Now, this Bills offense, they're first in total yards. This defense, they rank top six in yards per pass attempt, top five in yards per carry, and they're recording the most interceptions. The Bills are also 11, 5, and 2 against the spread as favorites of 7 or more points with Josh Allen as their starter. This is dating back to 2019.
Also, on paper, the Jets defense really isn't that bad. But I can definitely see Von Miller lighting up Zach Wilson here. So I don't think there will be too many points scored for the Jets here.
To recap our picks, Pam is going with the Chiefs, Ariel likes the Texans, and I am on the Bills.
