The Best Fifa Football Awards are back for 2020.

Football's world governing body will be handing out seven prizes to reward the very best the men's and women's game had to offer this year. Barcelona star Lionel Messi will be hoping to defend his crown while Megan Rapinoe will have to hand over her women’s prize.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski is tipped to win the men’s award after helping the German giants win the Champions League back in August although four Liverpool players were shortlisted alongside him after winning their first English league title in 30 years in June.

Awards will be given for the best players in the world as well as the best coaches and goalkeepers as well as for the best goal scored in the calendar year, with the winner of that one receiving the famous Fifa Puskas Award.

The 2020 Fifa Fair Play Award and 2020 Fifa Fan Award will also be awarded as well announcements of the 2020 men’s and women’s Fifa Fifpro World 11s.

When is the ceremony?

The 2020 Best Fifa Football Awards are on Thursday 17 December.

How can I watch it?

The whole ceremony will be streamed live on the Fifa website from 6pm while you can follow the whole thing with The Independent’s live blog too.

Who won last year?

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the award last year beating Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk into second place and old rival Cristiano Ronaldo in third.

Megan Rapinoe won the women’s award ahead of US Women’s National Team teammate Alex Morgan in second and England’s Lucy Bronze in third.
