The Cincinnati Bengals went out and got a former first-round cornerback during the second week of free agency with Eli Apple.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported the news.

Apple, 25, was a former Ohio State standout who went 10th overall in 2016 before having a weird split with the New York Giants. He’s since played for two other teams, including a two-game stint with Carolina last year.

In 2020, Apple had a deal fall through with Las Vegas, then landed in Carolina where he played in those two games before getting cut due to an injury. In 2019, he graded at a 63.8 at PFF, allowing 43 catches on 68 targets.

At this stage of his career, Apple is interesting depth for the Bengals as they otherwise hope to start Trae Waynes, Mike Hilton and Chidobe Awuzie with Darius Phillips in there for good measure.

This bit of news followed the team working out a deal to bring back guard Quinton Spain.
